Alternatives to LASIK: What if I Don’t Qualify?

Many people long to spend less time thinking about their glasses or contact lenses and look for ways to correct their vision. While LASIK is the most familiar name in laser eye surgery, not everyone qualifies for this procedure. At Heart of Texas Eye Care, we offer LASIK alternatives to help almost anyone benefit from vision correction.

What is LASIK Laser Eye Surgery?

LASIK (which stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is one of the most well-known and widely performed procedures in the laser eye surgeries category.

This advanced surgical technique involves using a highly specialized laser to create a thin, hinged flap on the surface of your eye, specifically on the cornea, which is the transparent, dome-shaped outer layer covering the front of the eye.

The creation of this flap is a critical step, as it allows the eye surgeon to gently lift it and gain access to the underlying corneal tissue. Once the flap is lifted, the surgeon employs another precise laser, known as an excimer laser, to meticulously reshape the cornea.

This reshaping process is tailored to correct various refractive errors, such as astigmatism, which causes blurred vision due to an irregularly shaped cornea; nearsightedness (myopia), where distant objects appear blurry; and farsightedness (hyperopia), where close objects are difficult to see clearly.

The entire LASIK procedure is renowned for its safety and effectiveness, providing many individuals with significant improvements in their vision.

However, it is important to be aware that LASIK is not the only option available, and exploring other alternatives may be beneficial for those who may not be ideal candidates for this particular surgery.

Alternatives to LASIK: What if I Don’t Qualify?

Because LASIK involves creating an incision in the cornea's surface, it may not be suitable for everyone. While highly effective for many, this procedure might not be the best solution for your specific vision needs or eye health conditions.

It is crucial to explore other options if LASIK is not a viable choice for you.

Who Doesn’t Qualify for LASIK?

There are several primary reasons that you might not qualify for LASIK. These reasons are based on your unique eye characteristics and overall health, which can affect the safety and effectiveness of the procedure.

  1. You have thin, misshapen, or unhealthy corneas: The cornea's thickness and shape are critical factors in determining LASIK eligibility. If your corneas are too thin or have an irregular shape, the procedure could compromise your eye health or fail to deliver the desired results.
  2. You play contact sports or engage in other activities that could dislodge the flap: Individuals who participate in high-impact sports or activities that involve physical contact may risk dislodging the corneal flap created during LASIK, leading to complications.
  3. You have problems with dry eye that could worsen after LASIK: Pre-existing dry eye conditions can be exacerbated by LASIK, as the procedure can temporarily reduce tear production, leading to discomfort and prolonged recovery.
  4. Your age means you will not enjoy the maximum benefits: Age can influence the effectiveness of LASIK. Younger patients may not have stable vision, while older individuals might not experience the full benefits due to age-related changes in the eyes.
  5. Your eyes are not healthy enough for eye surgery: General eye health is a significant consideration. Conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, or other eye diseases can make LASIK unsuitable or unsafe.

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) also known as LALEX (Laser-Assisted Lenticue EXtraction) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)

These alternative forms of laser eye surgery also aim to reshape the cornea using a laser, but they offer different approaches that leave the corneal surface more stable than LASIK.

The SMILE/LALEX procedure involves a much smaller incision, which reduces the risk of complications associated with the corneal flap. PRK, on the other hand, removes the corneal surface entirely, allowing it to regenerate without any weak areas.

As a result, individuals who cannot undergo LASIK due to dry eye, corneal health issues, or other factors may find these procedures beneficial. Although PRK has a longer recovery time than other types of vision correction, it can be the best option for some people, offering a stable and effective solution.

The Path to Clearer Vision Starts Here

ICL (IntraCameral Lens)

This option preserves the integrity of the corneal surface and involves minimal recovery time. An Intra-Cameral Lens (ICL) is a specially designed lens placed behind your iris and over your natural lens.

It works by correcting the angle of light as it passes through your eye, providing clear vision. These lenses are versatile and can be an option for almost anyone, regardless of corneal thickness or shape.

RLE (Refractive Lens Exchange) also known as CLR (Clear Lens Replacement)

Eyes often begin to experience age-related changes for individuals over 40. One common condition is presbyopia, which occurs when the eyes' lenses stiffen over time, making it difficult to focus on close objects. Since LASIK does not address issues with the lens itself, it may not be effective for those over 40 dealing with these changes.

In such cases, refractive lens exchange (RLE) may be the most suitable option. This procedure involves replacing the aging natural lenses with artificial ones that do not age, do not develop cataracts, and can correct vision problems like astigmatism. RLE offers a long-term solution for maintaining clear vision as you age.

Staff and medical team are great! Good attitude, and a good sense of humor. I’ve been a patient there for a while and they’ve been professional and courteous since day one. Highly recommended.
